주민현황 및 문화
압해도와 육지에서 가장 먼 섬에 속하는 흑산도 등에는 청동기시대 고인돌과 유물이 출토되어, 최소한 2,500여 년 전부터 사람이 살았을 것으로 추정됩니다.
또한 828년에 장보고가 당나라와 교역 당시 쌓은 상라산성이 흑산도에 남아 중국과 활발한 교역이 진행되었음을 알 수 있습니다.
신안군은 압해도 등 14개의 주요 섬이 읍면의 행정단위를 이룹니다.
또한 관광객이 많은 홍도와 9개 작은 섬에 출장소가 있습니다.
2013년 기준 신안군 인구는 44,162명으로 각 읍면별로 1,000∼6,800여명이 대부분 농업, 어업, 천일염업 등에 종사합니다.
신안에는 여러 공동체 놀이문화가 아직 남아 있습니다.
장산도는 일을 할 때 같이 부르던 들노래가 유명하며, 비금도의 밤달애는 장례식 때 상주를 위로하는 놀이이자 굿입니다.
또한 비금도 뜀뛰기 강강술래는 남녀가 같이 어울리는 민속놀이입니다.

노벨평화상 수상자 김대중 대통령
대한민국 제15대(1998∼2003) 김대중 대통령은 1924년 신안군 하의도에 후광리에서 태어나 2009년 8. 18 향년 85세의 나이로 영면하셨습니다.
재임기간인 2000년 6월 분단이후로 처음으로 남북정상회담을 평양에서 개최, 역사적인 6. 15 남북공동선언을 이끌어내 이산가족 상봉, 금강산관광 남북관계를 화해, 협력 체제로 전환하였습니다. 김대중 대통령께서 민주주의와 인권신장을 향한 40여년에 걸친 노력과 한반도 긴장완화 등 국제 평화에 기여한 공로를 인정받아 2000년 12월 10일 노벨평화상을 수상하셨습니다.
후광 김대중 대통령의 생가는 하의면 후광리에 위치하며 1999년 종친회를 중심으로 당시 원형 그대로 복원되었고 신안군 향토자료 23호로 2000년 지정되었습니다.

Fourteen large islands including Aphaedo are the basic administrative units of Shinan County. Also 9 islands including Hongdo where there are many tourists have a small local office.
The number of local residents in Sinan was 44,162 in 2013, and about 1,000~6,800 in each district engaged in agriculture, fishery and saltpan.
A lot of traditional community entertainment culture still remained in the islands of Shinan County. Jangsando is famous for the songs which are sung during works.
Bandarae of Bigeumdo is a special play to console the chief mourner in funerals. Also ganggangsuwalrae of Bigeumdo is a traditional folk dance for both men and women to get together.

Nobel Peace Laureate President Kim, Dae-jung
Kim, Dae-jung, the 15th president of Korea, was born in Haido, Sinan County in 1924 and passed away in 2009 when he was 85 years old.
He made a historic summit meeting in 2000 in Pyongyang with North Korean leader Kim, Jong-il. This marked a critical juncture in inter-Korean relations, and the two parts of Korea have had direct contact with each other since then. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for his contribution to the democracy and peace between South and North Korea.
